  What is Massage???

Massage is a "Hands-On" therapy in which muscles and other soft tissues are manipulated to improve health and well-being. Varieties of massage range from gentle kneading of muscles and other soft tissues to deeper manual techniques. ( Deep Tissue work isn't "supposed to hurt", if it's done properly.)  Massage has been practiced as a healing therapy for centuries in nearly every culture around the world. It helps relieve muscle tension, reduces stress and evokes feelings of well-being. Massage may be called by many names, (i.e. Manual Therapy, Bodywork, Myo-Therapy, Soft Tissue Manipulation.) but when you get right down to it, it should just make you feel better.

The design of your bodywork/massage session may vary from light touch to deep tissue movement therapy and will usually be a combination of both. This will depend on many variables such as your exact type(s) of muscular tension, physical condition, injuries, etc.  I custom tailor your personal bodywork session to your specific needs, preferences, and body type.  Since every client is unique, every massage is unique.

·               I always use my padded massage table.  I cannot perform a proper, professional massage on the floor  or a bed nor do I want to possibly injure myself in the process by attempting to do so.

·            I use top quality massage products, which leave your skin feeling soft and moisturized.

·              Should you have uncommon soreness, significant injuries, or specific areas that require extra attention, prior to your massage, please do not hesitate to bring these to my attention before or during your massage.

·              Your appearance, age, body type, body weight, and physical attributes do not determine if I will take you as a massage client. I am dedicated to offering a high quality, custom tailored massage to each and every client.

Please do not take muscle relaxers or pain relievers or alcohol prior to your treatment. As these could possibly contribute to injuries during your massage due to the diminished sensation of pain or the over relaxation of muscle/tendon tissue.

Love Massage?
But feel you can't really afford one as often as you'd like, well keep reading.

According to a recently released study, consumers cited cost as one of the main reasons they put off booking their next massage. Yet when clearly considered, the price might not be as much as you first think. The effects of bodywork are compounded with more frequent sessions--meaning the more massages you get, the greater the health benefits received overall and during each session. In addition, massages come in a range of environments, from independent practitioners working in small private practitice offices (the most economical), to Spas, that offer the full spa experience (usually at more expensive prices).
The bottom line: Though this, to some may be a luxurious treat, massage should/could be/is viewed as a key investment in your health.

Aside from those solely seeking relaxation, a significant percentage of massage therapy clients receive massage for pain relief. A 2005 USA Today/ABC News/Stanford University Medical Center poll indicated that more than half of Americans suffer from chronic or recurrent pain.

And many doctors are now recommending massage:
  • 57 percent of those who talked to their doctor about massage reported that their doctor strongly recommended or encouraged them to get massage.
  • Among 18-24 year olds, nearly 70 percent said their doctor strongly recommended massage.
  • Sixty percent of Americans would like to see massage covered by their health insurance plan.

2010 Massage Therapy Consumer Survey Fact Sheet

Men Neglecting Massage Therapy in Past Year

Ten percent of men used massage in the last year, compared to 18 percent in 2009, according to the 14th annual consumer survey sponsored by the American Massage Therapy Association® (AMTA®). This drop is attributed to the economic climate of the last two years.
• According to similar findings by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), about 57 percent of men have visited a physician within the past year, compared with 74 percent of women
• Massage use in women for 2010 was 25 percent, compared to 26 percent in 2009
• As a result of the lower use of massage by men, for the first time in three years, the percentage of all adults who had a massage in the previous 12 months dropped from 22 percent in 2009 to 18 percent in 2009
• The number of all adults who had discussed massage with their doctor dropped from 18 percent in 2009 to 16 percent in 2010, a drop that can also be attributed to men’s decreased doctor visits

License required.

(1) No person may practice or represent himself or herself as a massage practitioner without first applying for and receiving from the department a license to practice.

(2) A person represents himself or herself as a massage practitioner when the person adopts or uses any title or any description of services that incorporates one or more of the following terms or designations: Massage, massage practitioner, massage therapist, massage therapy, therapeutic massage, massage technician, massage technology, massagist, masseur, masseuse, myotherapist or myotherapy, touch therapist, reflexologist, acupressurist, body therapy or body therapist, or any derivation of those terms that implies a massage technique or method.

Here is something else we would like to bring to the attention of the good citizens of Washington (and elsewhere around the country), with the introduction of massage to mainstream America, there are a few derogatory/demeaning terms still in use. These terms were used in by-gone days as slurs or in jokes. With the help of all of you, we would like to abolish the use of these to describe Massage Practitioners/Bodyworkers and Massage clinics/Spas.
Here are a few of the names/terms some people still tend (though maybe a bit misguidedly) to use:

Masseuse/Masseur: An antiquated European term and now associated closely with the darker trades in the U.S.
  (Correct terms: Massage Therapist/Practitioner, Bodyworker)

Massage Parlor: A place where some unsavory things might take place.
(Correct terms: Clinic, Spa, Massage Clinic, Massage Office, places where legitimate business is conducted)

Please understand that these terms tend to continue to propagate the negative view that has plagued the massage profession for way too many years. Most of the practitioners in the industry now, are trying to make an honest living and to dispel the ideas that massage practitioners/massage therapists somehow have anything to do with prostitution or the sex trade. With the help of the public, maybe we will be able to change these opinions in the very near future.

So, please, whenever you hear someone use one of these terms, we ask that you try to educate them and help us by simply explaining the difference in the language and the harm these terms are doing.

Thank you for your help

Now if only we could get the City of Everett, WA to remove this type of offensive language from their rules and regulations, it would be a boon to our profession......
